Active Older Adult Israel Interfaith Trip
Israel Interfaith Trip
YMCA Active Older Adults
May 27 - June 7, 2018
In September of 2017, the YMCA of Greater Houston planned a unique trip to Israel with its community partner, the Evelyn Rubenstein JCC (ERJCC). Due to Hurricane Harvey, new dates had to be selected. After an unforgettable eleven days abroad, this one-of-a-kind visit wrapped up in early June, proving to be a powerful experience of Israel's inspiration and energy as a tool for building community.
This program was the brainchild of Elena Dinkin, who has been with the Y for eight and a half years as the advisor for Active Older Adult (AOA) programs in Houston. Elena has taken AOA members on six cruises during her time at the Y, and her idea to plan such unique visits stems from a desire to provide new and exciting experiences to members of the Y community. A big highlight of this trip for Elena was visiting the YMCA in Jerusalem!
The Israel Interfaith Trip included 23 people from the Houston community, two-thirds of whom are not Jewish. ERJCC CEO Joel Dinkin writes, "For me, this was my 14th Israel experience but the first with this focus - to see Israel through a different lens. So much of our work is focused on our own board, our staff, and on looking inward. This time, I saw and experienced Israel as ‘a light upon the nations.’ … For the Houston group, this was a way to meet unique individual needs: be it curiosity, spirituality, etc. and, as a community, to continue to build bridges."
Elena is now working on an Alaskan cruise, scheduled for August 3, 2019. More information coming soon!
