The program purpose is to help teens develop a positive sense of self and set high educational and career goals. Y Achievers supports students with acquiring and qualifying for secondary education, exposes students to diverse career options, creates channels for continuing community involvement and recognizes and promotes excellence in our youth.
Teens are introduced into the art of turntablism. Music Matters is an initiative geared towards improving youth self-esteem, enhancing social skills, as well as increasing an interest and desire for academic achievement through the arts. Topics and techniques include history and culture, scratching, cueing and mixing, music theory, equipment essentials, communication and speech, and business basics.
Y Youth and Government
YMCA Youth and Government is a national program that involves thousands of teens nationwide in a state-organized model government program. Students from every corner of the U.S have the opportunity to immerse themselves in experimental civic engagement and quite literally, practice democracy. Students are able to select individual branches of the government such as: Legislative, Judicial, State Affairs, Appellate Court and perform mock trials and debates. When students excel in the City-Wide District competition they are given the opportunity to excel in at the State-Wide State competition at the Capitol in Austin, Texas.
