MLK Day of Service

MLK Day of Service is a federal holiday observed as a national day of service. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to issues we face everyday in our communities. 


Join us for the 30th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast, a kick off for MLK Day of Service projects hosted at YMCAs across Houston. 

Saturday, January 19 at 9 am we'll be gathering at the Kingdom Builders Center, The Promenade Room 6011 W. Orem Dr. Houston, Texas 77085 to commission our projects across the city. Trusted journalist and Board Chair Khambrel Marshall will be the emcee!

On Monday, January 21, 2019, YMCAs throughout the city will host service events to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. We invite you to join us, so we can make our community stronger and a better place for all.

Aldine Greenspoint Family YMCA Community Garden Project Volunteers will weed and prepare the garden beds for spring. In addition, volunteers will help put together information for the community to promote the garden and healthy eating options.
Alief Family YMCA PennyWise Resale Volunteer opportunity with an organization that brings hope to domestic violence and sexual assault survivors. The task is preparing jewelry for the sales floor, primarily a sitting position. Knowledge of jewelry prices, identifying silver, gold and semi-precious stones a plus! Based at the Richmond Pennywise store. All volunteers must fill out an application, confidentiality and release of liability form.
Brenda and John Duncan YMCA Duncan Day of Service at Star of Hope Star of Hope is a Christ-centered community dedicated to meeting the needs of homeless men, women and their children. We will partner with Star of Hope for Snacks and Goodnight. Volunteers will help with distributing snacks, reading, and doing arts and crafts.
Conroe Family YMCA Montgomery County Food Bank Sorting food and working in freezer and produce areas at the Montgomery County Food Bank.
Lake Houston Family YMCA Family Time Painting, landscaping, organizing. Project supports the Family time crisis and counseling center.
Langham Creek Family YMCA AOA Home Cleanup We will take a list of requested chores from members of our AOA that they cannot complete without help. We hope to bridge the gap between our senior members and our teens while helping to make home life a little easier for our members. Examples include flowerbed cleanup, brush clearing, house cleaning, and possible small room painting projects.
M.D. Anderson Family YMCA & Foster Family YMCA Looscan Elementary Beautification Project We will be painting the walkway covers around the school.
Monty Ballard YMCA at Cinco Ranch Ballard House Beautification Monty Ballard YMCA in partnership with GEICO, will work together to provide onsite beautification to the Ballard House Residential Facility. Volunteers must be at least 17 years old.
Monty Ballard YMCA at Cinco Ranch PennyWise Resale Store- Mason Road Monty Ballard YMCA in partnership with St. Peter's United Methodist Church will be serving at PennyWise Resale store. Volunteers will receive and sort donations as well as work in the warehouse. Volunteers must be at least 17 years old.
Monty Ballard YMCA at Cinco Ranch Ballard House Crafting Projects YMCA staff, community volunteers and members will create crafts (crosses and Valentine's Day cards) for residents and families of the Ballard House. Open to all ages.
T.W. Davis Family YMCA Common Threads Volunteers will come to common threads and help sort and organize their donations as well as work in other areas of the building doing general cleaning.
Thelma Ley Anderson Family YMCA TLA and Alvin ISD Hygiene Packages TLA is partnering with Alvin ISD to put together 500 hygiene packages for the registered homeless children in Alvin. Our volunteers will be able to sort through donations as well as help package the items.
Tellepsen Family Downtown YMCA Beautifying Mac Gregor Elementary We will be doing multiple projects around Mac Gregor Elementary School. Projects will include painting of classrooms, organizing book rooms, working in the school garden, and other small projects the school may have.
Trotter Family YMCA Reimagine Resale MLK Day of Service Volunteers will spend 4 hours separating and sorting through donated items. Volunteers will also stock the resale shop for the next business day where 100% of the proceeds go to Love146. Love146 is a international profit working to end child trafficking and exploitation.
Vic Coppinger Family YMCA Forgotten Angels Spring Garden Preparation We will help the Forgotten Angel organization prepare their gardens for Spring 2019.
Wendel D. Ley Family YMCA Youth Reach Houston Volunteers will support Youth Reach Houston with various needs: custodial, landscape, and handy-work. This project supports the upkeep of an organization that provides outreach, residency and guidance to troubled teen boys.
West Orem Family YMCA Community Drive Benefitting Madison Feeder Pattern From 10am--12pm drop off specific items needed to stock the community pantries at our local schools: hygiene products, school uniform basics, instant noodles, canned fruit and healthy snack foods.
The Woodlands Family YMCA Montgomery County Food Bank We will be partnering with the Montgomery County Food Bank to sort food to help families in need within our communities.
YMCA International Services Plant It Forward Plant It Forward trains and supports former refugees to operate their own urban farm businesses. Great opportunity to get outside and work with your hands!
