The YMCA began offering programs in the Northwest Houston area as early as 1919. A YMCA there was formally organized as the West End-Heights Extension in 1938, then renamed the Northwest YMCA in 1948. The original
YMCA building on the present 34th Street site was completed in 1956, then expanded in 1962. Then, after almost 50 years the Northwest YMCA literally outgrew itself. The original building was dismantled in 2001, and new facilities were dedicated on the same site on
January 25, 2002.
Even now, after serving for over 90 years, the Northwest YMCA continues to grow. In January, 2009, construction began to expand its youth, wellness, and group exercise programs. On October 26, 2009, these new facilities were dedicated, and the Northwest YMCA was formally renamed in honor of a distinguished YMCA Family: The Harriet and Joe Foster Family YMCA serving Northwest Houston.
