Water safety and fun for everyone! YMCA Safety Around Water is our initiative with the aggressive goal of eliminating drowning – the second leading cause of death of children under the age of 14 in Texas – through water safety education and awareness, and through teaching swimming skills.
What is YMCA Safety Around Water?
Safety Around Water was launched in the spring of 2007 as a response to an alarming trend of steadily increasing drowning rates in the state of Texas, specifically in Houston. This free program builds community awareness about water safety and teaches swim skills to children in low income areas and communities that would otherwise not have the opportunity to participate in a swimming program.
YMCA Safety Around Water Brings Swim Lessons to You
We bring swim lessons to children by sending teams of lifeguards and certified swim instructors to visit apartment communities and school districts. In many cases these travelling swim lessons provide the only opportunity for children learn life-saving swim skills.
What We Teach
By using the Safety Around Water model, we teach children from all backgrounds that water should be fun and not feared —as long as you know how be safe in and around water.
We teach children fundamental water safety skills that include the concepts of:
- Reach, throw, don’t go
- What to look for in a safe place to swim
Kids learn what to do if they find themselves in the water unexpectedly - from how to reach the water’s surface if they submerge to safely reaching a pool’s edge or exiting any body of water:
- Jump/Push/Turn/Grab: teaches a child to push off the bottom of the pool as they are submerging to get back up to the surface while turning to grab the side of the pool
- Swim/Float/Swim: teaches children to swim a short distance on their front, roll over onto their back to rest, and then roll on their front to continue swimming to safety
Schedule a Presentation on Water Safety
We provide water safety information through Speakers Bureau presentations with the goal to educate parents, care givers and children by providing safety tips.

The USA Swimming Foundation's Make a Splash Initiative is a national child-focused water safety campaign, which aims to provide the opportunity for every child in America to learn to swim. Through Make a Splash, the USA Swimming Foundation partners with learn-to-swim providers and water safety advocates across the country to provide swimming lessons and educate children and their families on the importance of learning how to swim. The USA Swimming Foundation has invested millions of dollars to provide grants to qualified Local Partner learn-to-swim programs, to spread national awareness, and to bring together strategic partners to end drowning. To date, more than 2 million children have received the lifesaving gift of swim lessons through the USA Swimming Foundation Make a Splash Local Partner network, comprised of more than 600 qualified lesson providers across the nation.
